Led by Angelise Benimadho and UsZee McKoy, Unspoken Youth Dialogue is hosting a virtual seminar to inspire citizens across the United States to question: “how can we participate meaningfully in democratic life when political information increasingly reaches us through personalized algorithms and highly polarized digital environments?”
Media literacy should be understood not simply as an individual “fact-checking” skill, but as a component of civil capacity. Within social media applications, political participation does not occur only when individuals consciously intend to participate politically. Everyday acts of attention, engagement, circulation, and interpretation can contribute to the production and amplification of political information in these environments. Benimadho and McKoy hope to encourage dialogue on the impact of being critical consumers and producers of political media during this workshop.
